Review: Jazz Shaped

Benoit Viellefon Hot Club – Live At The Quecumbar( Listen and buy the CD )

Performing at Battersea’s Manouche jazz hot-spot ‘Le Quecumbar‘, this record sees gypsy jazz aficionado ‘Benoit Viellefon’ and his substantially sized hot club ensemble look back at the music of the Romany Gypsy community in the early – mid 20th century, in particular the work of my old favourite… Mr Django Reinhardt. Although it generally builds throughout, the album contrasts a quaint Parisian temperament with a raw energy that Viellefon’s ensemble inject into each piece. Eventually climaxing in a rousing rendition of ‘The God Father’ and Django’s ‘Minor Swing’, there is no way them rhythmic strumming patterns won’t have you tapping your foot.
